Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking: 3-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Bigodi Wetland Walk

Morning:

  • 7:00 AM – Departure from Kampala/Entebbe
    Begin your journey to Kibale Forest National Park, located around 5-6 hours from Kampala or Entebbe. The scenic drive takes you through the Ugandan countryside, providing a glimpse of rural life and beautiful landscapes.

  • 1:00 PM – Arrival and Check-in
    Arrive at your lodge or camp near Kibale, such as Kyaninga Lodge or Chimpanzee Forest Guesthouse. Check in, unpack, and enjoy the serene surroundings.

Afternoon:

  • 2:30 PM – Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Walk
    After lunch, head to the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a renowned birdwatching and wildlife site. The guided walk through the swampy forest offers an opportunity to spot various monkeys, birds, and reptiles. Look out for species like grey-cheeked mangabeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and the elusive blue monkeys. It's a relaxing way to acclimatize to the forest environment and spot more primates before the main chimp trekking experience the following day.

Evening:

  • 6:00 PM – Dinner and Relaxation
    Return to your lodge and enjoy a leisurely dinner. Afterward, relax and enjoy the tranquil forest surroundings.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

Morning:

  • 5:30 AM – Early Morning Departure for Chimp Trekking
    Start your day early with a light breakfast. Kibale Forest is known for its early morning chimpanzee activity, and it’s best to head into the forest as soon as it opens. Your guided chimpanzee trekking adventure begins at Kanyanchu Visitor Center.

  • 8:00 AM – Chimpanzee Trekking
    Embark on a trek into the forest with a knowledgeable guide. The trek typically lasts 2-4 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are located, but the excitement of tracking these wild primates is well worth it. Once found, you’ll observe the chimps’ social behaviors, learn about their interactions, and enjoy the incredible experience of seeing them in their natural habitat. The park's rich biodiversity means you'll also encounter other wildlife, such as baboons, red-tailed monkeys, and a wide array of bird species.

Afternoon:

  • 12:30 PM – Return to Lodge for Lunch
    After your trek, return to your lodge to relax and enjoy a well-deserved lunch.

  • 2:30 PM – Nature Walk or Visit to Kibale Forest Research Centre
    In the afternoon, take a nature walk through the park's other trails or visit the Kibale Forest Research Centre to learn more about the park’s ongoing conservation efforts, primate research, and forest ecology. If you're interested, you can also visit the Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lakes nearby for scenic views of the stunning volcanic lakes and surrounding landscapes.

Evening:

  • 6:30 PM – Dinner and Relaxation
    Return to your lodge for dinner and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the forest.

Day 3: Morning Primate Walk and Departure

Morning:

  • 7:00 AM – Optional Morning Primate Walk
    For early risers, there’s the option of a morning primate walk to spot other primate species in the park. This walk will take you deeper into Kibale's forest trails and offer a chance to spot red colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various bird species.

  • 9:00 AM – Breakfast at the Lodge
    Return to your lodge for breakfast after the walk. Relax and reflect on your experiences in the forest.

Late Morning:

  • 11:00 AM – Departure for Kampala/Entebbe
    Check out of your lodge and begin the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe, taking in the scenic views on your way.

  • 3:00 PM – Arrival in Kampala/Entebbe
    Arrive back in Kampala or Entebbe in the afternoon, marking the end of your unforgettable three-day chimpanzee trekking adventure in Kibale Forest.
